Belated Thanks and Other Random Musings…..

I realize that it’s been awhile since my last post. Life has been crazy and sadly I haven’t had as much time to sew or photograph my projects. Our computer has also contributed to my headaches lately. I have spent way too many hours on the phone with tech support halfway around the world and their last recommendation was to completely wipe my computer’s hard drive and reinstall windows and everything else. Argh!!! I dread doing that and will procrastinate as long as my computer will hold out. Surprisingly, Mr. Dashing is looking forward to doing this (to improve his video game activities perhaps?) and jokingly calls this the “nuclear” option. Sorry but I have way too many files and I am not ready to go “nuclear” anytime soon.

On a more topical note – I owe a belated thanks to the lovely Emily from Calico Stretch (many apologies Emily- so ashamed that this is so late). She nominated me for the bloggy award One Lovely Blog/Very Inspiring Blog.

I am truly inspired by Emily’s blog. I admire her tenacity in her fitting challenges – particularly trouser fitting. I’m not sure I would have the patience to fit trousers by myself. I did take a jeans fitting class with Jennifer Stern back in February. She personally helped fit me and we went through at least three muslins. I hope to blog more about the details next month. Below are pictures of progress thus far. What do you think of the fit? I think I need to tweak the fit but I am happy with the progress I have made.

On another belated thank you, I would also like to thank Amity from Lolita Patterns for sending me a cool Fuchsia package a few months ago (Yikes! only seemed like yesterday). I won the Lolita Patterns giveaway back in February and am looking forward to making a pencil skirt with the pink-dyed houndstooth fabric. Lolita Patterns is one of the many cool indie pattern companies that have launched this year.

Lastly, I was happy to be featured today on PatternReview. I am more of a lurker than an active reviewer on PatternReview. I hope to post more reviews when I have some time (heh heh- easier said than done). That said, I have participated in a few of the PR events (most recently, the still yet to be blogged about PatternReview San Francisco). What a lovely community of people from all walks of life. I like the friendly, helpful vibe on PR and seem to visit that site more than any other sewing site. Thanks PR for featuring me!

Congrats on your award and your feature on Pattern Review! How exciting. I think the jeans/trouser fit is coming along very nicely!

    • Javie says:

Thanks for the kind comments! I was a bit insecure about the final fit and e-mailed the pics to Jen awhile ago but she hasn’t gotten back to me. It’s good to get other feedback.

      • Gjeometry says:

Trouser fitting is SO difficult. I started a pair of Burda trousers last year (actually, it was my first sewing project ever) and was rated a 4 out 4 in difficulty. So, I’ve been struggling with them ever since. Give me a dress/skirt to sew any day of the week!

      • Javie says:

Totally agree! Wow- that is brave to take on trousers as first project! I’m glad that it didn’t discourage you from sewing. The results you had could also be due to a mediocre pattern. It helped me to get someone knowledgeable to fit my pair of trousers.

  2. symondezyn says:

Congrats on all the recognitions! I think your trouser fitting looks very promising – much more advanced than anything I’ve attempted in the trouser department for sure! LOL

    • Javie says:

Thanks! I think fitting is the hardest part of making trousers. My weight also fluctuates so this makes it extra challenging- for my last pair I seemed to taking off and adjusting the waistband dozens of times! I liked your last trouser attempt – you just plunged into the fun parts without fiddling too much with muslins.

      • symondezyn says:

LMAO first AND last attempt you mean… I didn’t bother with muslins cause the fabric I used was crap.. and those pants are long gone now because of my own weight fluctuation, so I totally get where you’re coming from. I plan on attempting trousers again, and this time I’ll do it right… muslin, proper fabric, all that good stuff ^__^

      • Javie says:

Hee hee- I know. I have a few trouser UFOs because I was so disgusted by the fit. I didn’t even get to the fun parts. With this last muslin hopefully I’ll get a decent pair of jeans.

      • symondezyn says:

        As un-fun as muslin-ing is, it’s certainly worth it isn’t it?🙂

      • Javie says:

Agree! Especially if you want to wear said item.🙂

  3. Those jeans are starting to look good-OMG where are you? Just back up your files (get a dropbox account and use Google drive) and wipe the computer already😄

    • Javie says:

Thanks! Just got an external drive (have too many files) and backing up everything. Dragging my feet on going nuclear but will have to bite the bullet soon.😛

  4. soapjam says:

Congrats on the award and the feature!🙂

    • Javie says:

Thanks Silvia! I haven’t been blogging as much on this blog as I would like. Notice the timing in my attention to my other blog😉 Both soaping and sewing give me such joy though. Challenge is to find time for it all!

  5. Oh my god I can’t believe I haven’t stopped by for ages! I’m hopeless so we can be hopeless together right! Thank you for the shout out (rather belatedly) and yay to you for the PR feature.

Did you did you did you did you backup all your stuff and get the puter sorted? I really hope so.

And the jeans look fantastic. The fit is really good so stop right there, if you haven’t already. Did you make them up?

    • Javie says:

Thanks Emily! I’ve been crazy busy lately so my sewing and blogging has been nil. So haven’t made up the jeans yet. I actually dropped 8 lbs so I might have to start over again with the fitting. :Z And no my computer is still blue screening every few days. I did get everything backed up tho so maybe when things quiet down a bit I can finally mess with it. I haven’t been logging in to the new “readers” so my blog reading is also backed-up. I do get your blog updates via e-mail tho and I love all the productive sewing you have done lately! It’s great to see others have sewing success – keeps me inspired!

      • Oh wow you have had a time of it so please no pressure from me ok?! I reckon you’ll have to do some refitting too (8lbs is a lot – I hope you’re well?). Anyway, thinking of you🙂

      • Javie says:

No worries- I am not sure why I dropped 8 lbs. When I was working out regularly last year, I didn’t lose any weight. Now all of a sudden, I am dropping weight with no exercise! Maybe all the frantic running around I am doing trying to get everything done?!

      • frantic would work, though not recommended LOL. I hope things settle down for you at some stage soon.

      • Javie says:

Hi Emily, Thanks for the kind words. I may have brought all of it on myself. I am still trying to finish graduate school and now I am in process of trying to start a small micro business. In addition to sewing, I have recently become obessessed with soapmaking. I started another blog just on soap. It is at http://ecovioletsoap.com I am slacking a bit on that one too.😀

      • Oh Javie you are NOT slacking for goodness sake. And you’re allowed to be busy. Enjoy your time, when you have it. 🙂.
